Hey guys

Man have we got a lot of sweet stuff coming up in the next few weeks!

To start off, this year we have made some changes to how Glee Club will run. This will be in keeping with the responses we got from our Glee Club survey earlier in the year as well as general feedback. Our singing clubs will now be two separate groups. The casual all-comers group we’ve always had will still be up-and-running (more news on that to come) and we are also in the process of starting up an auditioned group with a faster pace of learning and a performance focus. The new performance group is modelled on US show choirs and will be producing cabaret style events throughout the year. Auditions for the new show choir are next weekend, so check out our page on Facebook or email Sam (events@musoc.org.nz) if you want a chance to be a part of this new Musoc movement.

Coming up next week will be Musoc’s first workshop for 2012. This workshop will be purely for singing and is designed for people who haven’t done a lot of singing before, so there’s no pressure. This will be a great opportunity for new members and for people without training who want an extra edge when going into auditions. The focusses are music theory, technique and singing in harmony. It’ll run in three clear one-hour segments so if you’re already a harmony-expert but need to learn to read music, you’re welcome to come to the first part and leave early. Similarly, if you’re already a music pro but need to work on your singing technique, you’re welcome to sneak in late. To find out more about the workshop, check out Facebook or email Aimee (admin@musoc.org.nz).

Next on the agenda: Arts Week! Last year, Musoc brought a fantastic 20s-themed cabaret to Canterbury’s Arts Week and it was a great success. This year we’re looking at a similar scale event and would love to hear your input. Do you have an idea for a theme or even a cheesy punning title for the show? Would you be interested in musically or technically directing? Email admin with your ideas or to volunteer.

Remember we’re always happy to hear your ideas and feedback, so flick an email to anyone on the committee (admin@musoc.org.nz is always happy to field through your responses!) any time if you have an idea for a show or a question about how the club is running for the year.

That’s all from us for now, hope term 1 has been treating you well,

Adios,

Musoc Admin

Get your tickets online now at The Court Theatre!

The Threepenny Opera, by German dramatist Bertold Brecht with music by Kurt Weill, is well known for its bawdy, sharp humour and its songs ‘Mack the Knife’, ‘Pirate Jenny’ and ‘What Keeps Mankind Alive’.

It tells the story of Macheath, the most notorious criminal in Victorian London – after Mack convinces Polly, the daughter of the leader of the beggars of London, to run away and become his wife, her father swears to find Macheath and have him hanged. Complicating this is the fact that the chief of police is Mack’s best friend, but also that Mack can’t keep out of harm’s way: it is the day of the coronation of Queen Victoria, and the public wants nothing more than a good old fashioned public hanging to add to the festivities.

The Threepenny Opera will satisfy all your musical and dramatic needs. With a fantastic cast and production team, it takes us to Victorian London with all its damp, dirty, dark tales – and darker humour.

Directed by Erin Harrington, with Assistant Direction from Sam Creed, The Threepenny Opera is not to be missed.
